Makar Sankranti and Hindu Mythology


Makar Sankranti sees the sun visiting the Makara (Capricorn) Rashi (House) in the celestial zone. It is also believed that Sun God Surya makes it a point to visit his son Shani (Saturn) every year on this particular day. Shani Dev is lord of Makara. Makara Sankranti heralds the auspicious days ahead after the dark nights, which start in december. Lord Vishnu is known to have overcome demons on this day. king Bhagirath performed tarpan for his ancestor Raja Sagar's sons with holy waters of River Ganga and freed them from the curse. Bhishama Pitamaha, son of Ganga, left his mortal body on this day for eternal abode.
